Mars es artista y activista trans que difunde la “alegría trans” (Trans Joy) compartiendo su arte con el mundo. Su enfoque es sobre la belleza de la imperfección y la fuerza de la honestidad radical. La obra de Mars encuentra su filo en la vulnerabilidad de su experiencia.

¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que querías ser artista?

Cuando estaba en la guardería siempre me metía en problemas por no colorear dentro de las líneas. Yo sólo quería dibujar en el reverso de las páginas de los libros para colorear. Creo que me atraía mucho la página en blanco desde edad temprana porque me daba la oportunidad de crear cosas que aún no podía ver. Creo que esto está profundamente ligado a mi identidad trans porque nunca antes había visto a un hombre trans, así que necesitaba averiguar cómo hacerlo posible, encontrar y vivir en un cuerpo que amara, y lo hice a través del arte desde que tengo uso de razón.

¿Qué entiendes por “arte trans”?

Jaja, esta es una divertida. Creo que eso lo decide la/el artista. Todo arte puede tratar sobre la transición y la transformación. Yo hago arte sobre mi identidad trans, pero no quiero que se me defina como una artista cuya obra se dirige explícitamente a las personas trans. Creo que mi viaje puede ayudar a cualquiera, especialmente algunas de mis piezas como “merece la pena vivir la vida” y “crecer duele pero todo estará bien”.

¿Qué te define como artista?

Creo que tengo un estilo muy definido y reconocible. Mi mayor inspiración es Keith Harring quien dijo “El arte es para todos”. Quiero que mi arte sea visto por tanta gente como sea posible. Quiero producir todo el arte que pueda antes de morir. En una época como esta, en la que se ataca a las personas trans, debemos seguir creando, encontrando la alegría y compartiendo nuestras voces. Siento profundamente en mi alma que este es mi propósito.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de ser artista y trans? 

Me he identificado con carta de LGBT y un hombre heterosexual y una mujer heterosexual y una persona no binaria lol. Creo que tener una visión tan amplia del mundo me lleva al núcleo de nuestros seres y me ayuda a crear arte que es conmovedor e impactante de una manera realmente universal.

¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien interesado en seguir una carrera artística?

¡Haz arte de mierda! Yo hago TANTO arte y creo todos los días. Todos tenemos millones de obras de arte de mierda dentro de nosotrxs, sólo se trata de sacarlas para que puedas llegar a las cosas buenas más rápido. Sigue creando y no tengas miedo de sacar tu trabajo, aunque no sea perfecto.

All art can be about transition and transformation: Interview with Mars Elliot Wright

Mars is a Trans artist and activist that spread “Trans Joy” by sharing art with the world. Interested in the beauty of imperfection and the strength of radical honesty, the work of Mars find its edge in the vulnerability.

What is your understanding of “trans art”?

Haha, this is a fun one. I think that’s up to the artist to decide. All art can be about transition and transformation. I make art about my Trans identity but I don’t want to be defined as an artist that’s work is explicitly for Trans people. I think my journey can help anyone, especially some of my pieces like “life is worth living” and “growing hurts but it will be ok”.

When did you first realized you wanted to be an artist?

When I was in kindergarten I would always get in trouble for not coloring in the lines and just wanting to draw on the backside of coloring book pages. I think I was so drawn to a blank page from an early age because it gave me the opportunity to create things I couldn’t see yet. I think it’s deeply tied to my trans identity because I had never seen a Trans man before so I needed to figure out how to make that possible, to find and live in a body I loved, and I did that through art from as young as I can remember.

What defines you as an artist?

I think I have a really distinct and recognizable style. My biggest inspiration is Keith Harring who said “Art is for Everybody”. I want my art to be seen by as many people as possible. I want to produce as much art as I can before I die. In a time like this where Trans people are under attack Trans folks need to keep creating, finding joy, and sharing their voices. I feel deeply in my soul this is my purpose.

What is your favorite thing about being and artist and trans?

I have identified with letters of LGBT and a straight man and straight woman and a nonbinary person lol. I think having that broad worldview taps me into the core of our beings and helps me to create touching and impactful art in a universal way.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in art?

Make shitty art! I put out SO much art and create every day. We all have millions of shitty art pieces in us it’s just about getting it out so you can get to the good stuff faster. Keep creating and don’t be afraid to put your work out there, even if it isn’t perfect.
